What Can College Do For Me?

The Tim and Tom Story.

By Penelope

This is the story of Tim. One day Tim woke up and told himself that he was going to be rich. Filthy rich. So rich that he could have whatever he wanted.  He didn’t know how it was going to happen, but he knew that somehow, some way it would.

This is Tim ten years later. He's 28. After he graduated high school,
he wanted to have fun, explore the world, and live life. To this day
he doesn't know what he meant by that.

He went to college for a semester and later dropped out because it "wasn't him."

Later he got a job doing construction with his uncle. He figured that in a year or two he'd have the money, the cars, the dream life. It's been ten years.

He's currently trying to win the lottery.

This is the story of Tom. He lived next door to Tim. He wanted to be rich too. He wanted an expensive car, a nice home, and a well paying job. He knew it was going to take a lot of hard work, but he was determined to make it happen.

Fast forward ten years later and Tom is 28. After he graduated from high school he went to the local community college and later transferred to a University. He worked hard, got good grades, and had an internship. That internship later turned into a job offer and that job offer, after much perseverance and tenacity, turned into a promotion. He kept working hard, he kept learning, and he kept getting promotions.

He now has everything he wanted and more.

Last week, Tom ran into Tim at the grocery story buying a lottery ticket. Tom offered Tim a few words of advice, "Sometimes we have to do more than just dream for the things we want in life. Sometimes we have to wake up and realize that the only thing standing between us and our dreams is hard work."

The story of Tim and Tom is a true one. It’s a story that has been told many times and lived by many people. Which story do you want to tell? The choice is up to you.

If you want Tom's story to one day be your story, there are five steps that you can take now to get there.

Step 1. Work Hard.
Step 2. Go to College.
Step 3. Work Hard in College.
Step 4. Graduate from College.
Step 5. Work Hard.

See, only 5 steps! Not too bad right? Ok, maybe it's a little vague. What does it really mean to work hard? What if you don't feel like it or what if it's, you know, hard?

I understand the feeling. Working hard is hard work. You have to study, you have to push yourself, and you have to want the best for yourself. Working hard isn't nearly as fun as going to the movies whenever you want, hanging out with your friends whenever you want, or just lying around whenever you want. But if you push yourself to be the best, you'll have the best in life. It's really that simple.

You've got step 1 covered. If you weren't interested in working hard and succeeding in college and in life, you wouldn't be here. My Kind Of College is here to help you succeed in college. But more importantly, you're here to help yourself. No one ever said that this college thing was going to be easy, but when we give it our all and push ourselves, suddenly things have a way of getting easier. You start to understand material better. You start to do well on exams. You begin to realize that hard work isn't that hard. Eventually, you begin to love challenging yourself. And if you keep it up, one day you'll wake up and realize that you have the life you’ve always dreamed of.
